Avlskarl Gallery er stolte af at præsentere Broken Tornado, den danske kunstner Absalon Kirkebys første soloudstilling i galleriet.

Forestil Dem en tornado. Vi befinder os måske i den amerikanske midtvest, hvor fænomenet jævnligt raser, river træer, huse og biler op og hvirvler dem i en kraftfuld spiralbevægelse. Genstandene bliver trukket højere og højere op, indtil de når orkanens øje, hvor der hersker en forunderlig stilstand. Her hænger de frit i luften, før de igen falder til jorden, smadrede og uigenkendelige, mens tornadoen raser videre.

Udstillingen Broken Tornado præsenterer 14 fotografiske værker i stor skala, der følger tornadoens udvikling og bevægelse igennem udstillingsrummet. Værkerne hænger, med et par markante undtagelser, i grupper af tre, der er i indbyrdes relation til hinanden. Vi møder tre næsten sort-hvide værker, med elementer, der synes at snurre om deres egen akse. Tre relativt abstrakte værker i brunlige nuancer, der alle har et centralt centrifugepunkt. Herefter tre mere figurative værker, der både formelt og motivisk taler om fastspændthed eller stilstand. Og endelig tre værker, der ligner de efterladenskaber, man kan finde efter en voldsom bevægelse.

Titelværket Broken Tornado viser en hest, der står fastspændt i sin stald med en spinkel kæde. I et andet værk finder vi logoet fra de Greyhound-busser, der kører på tværs af USA, en sølvfarvet væddeløbshund i spring. Og vi forestiller os, hvordan begge dyr løber ad en bane, der – som tornadoen – er både cirkulær og fremadstræbende.

Absalon Kirkebys værker balancerer imellem det rene fotografi med et konkret motiv, og det helt abstrakte billede, som oftest er konstrueret af adskillige fotografiske lag. Det er værker, der resonerer med hinanden indbyrdes, spejler og mimer hinandens komposition, med pludselige, aggressive brud, der driver serien fremad og tillader nye billeder at fødes.

I Broken Tornado er Kirkeby optaget af fotografiets formelle kvaliteter. Gennem en sammenstilling af konkrete og abstrakte motiver lader han værkerne smitte af på hinanden, så det abstrakte kan læses konkret, mens de rene motiver opløser sig i rytmer, former og kompositioner. Som når den tynde kæde, fastgjort til hestens grime går i dialog med en spinkel plante, der surrer sig fast på en mur – en samtale, der handler om at sidde fast, men også om selve linjen. Således folder værkernes indbyrdes dialog sig ud som en grundlæggende samtale om resonans og bevægelse og om, hvad et fotografi overhovedet kan være.

Absalon Kirkeby (f. 1983) er uddannet fra Det Kgl. Danske Kunstakademi i 2013. Avlskarl Gallery is proud to present Broken Tornado, Danish artist Absalon Kirkeby’s first solo exhibition in the gallery.

Imagine a tornado. We may be in the American Midwest, where the phenomenon regularly rages, uprooting trees, houses and cars and whirling them in a powerful spiral motion. The objects are pulled higher and higher until they reach the eye of the hurricane, where a wondrous stillness prevails. Here they hang freely in the air before falling to the ground again, smashed and unrecognizable, as the tornado rages on.

The exhibition Broken Tornado presents 14 large-scale photographic works that follow the tornado’s development and movement through the exhibition space. The works hang, with a few notable exceptions, in groups of three that are mutually related to each other. We meet three almost black-and-white works, with elements that seem to spin on their own axis. Three relatively abstract works in brownish shades, all of which have a central centrifugal point. Then three more figurative works, which both formally and motivically speak of tension or stagnation. And finally, three works that resemble the remains that can be found after a violent movement.

The title work, Broken Tornado, shows a horse that is tied in its stable with a flimsy chain. In another work, we find the logo of the Greyhound buses that run across the United States, a silver racing dog jumping. And we imagine how both animals run along a path that – like the tornado – is both circular and forward.

Absalon Kirkeby’s works balance between the pure photography with a concrete motif, and the completely abstract image, which is usually constructed from several photographic layers. These are works that resonate with each other, mirroring and miming each other’s composition, with sudden, aggressive breaks that propel the series forward and allow new images to be born.

In Broken Tornado, Kirkeby is concerned with the formal qualities of photography. Through a juxtaposition of concrete and abstract motifs, he lets the works rub off on each other, allowing the abstract to be read concretely, while the pure motifs dissolve into rhythms, shapes and compositions. Like when the thin chain attached to the horse’s halter engages in a dialogue with a slender plant that clings to a wall – a conversation that is about being stuck, but also about the line itself. Thus, the dialogue between the works unfolds as a fundamental conversation about resonance and movement and about what a photograph can possibly be.

Absalon Kirkeby (b. 1983) graduated from Det Kgl. Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2013.
